 The Forgetting by Sharon Cameron

four-half-stars

What isn’t written, isn’t remembered. Even your crimes.

Nadia lives in the city of Canaan, where life is safe and structured, hemmed in by white stone walls and no memory of what came before. But every twelve years the city descends into the bloody chaos of the Forgetting, a day of no remorse, when each person’s memories – of parents, children, love, life, and self – are lost. Unless they have been written.

In Canaan, your book is your truth and your identity, and Nadia knows exactly who hasn’t written the truth. Because Nadia is the only person in Canaan who has never forgotten.

But when Nadia begins to use her memories to solve the mysteries of Canaan, she discovers truths about herself and Gray, the handsome glassblower, that will change her world forever. As the anarchy of the Forgetting approaches, Nadia and Gray must stop an unseen enemy that threatens both their city and their own existence – before the people can forget the truth. And before Gray can forget her.

I read this book a few months ago (because of Nick) and somehow forgot to review it, but I did absolutely love it. I got this from the library but I had to return it before I could get to it. Since this was narrated by one of my favorite narrators (Therese Plummer) I decided to buy the audiobook instead which ended up being one of my favorite audiobooks. Reading books like this make me wish that we had so many more standalone non-contemporary books out there. This book is proof that you can tell one hell of an original story in one damn book. Part of the reason I loved this book so much was knowing that I had no idea what would happen because it would all end here. None of those cliche ending and cliffhangers that I’m so accustomed to in YA, which was very refreshing.

Although the city of Canaan sounds like a terrible place to live in, having everyone forget everything every 12 years, I loved the setting of this place and I loved seeing Cameron’s words bring this city to live. Nadia is our heroine and I loved every aspect of her. She wasn’t your typical fierce heroine, but she was strong and stubborn and loyal, especially in all the important ways.  Even though she has good reason to hate her sister and her dad, I loved that she still tried to make things better for everyone, not just herself. I loved that even though she had everything to lose, even possibly her life, she refused to give up. Such a great motto to live by, especially in times like this. I was worried about how the romance would play out, since it was a standalone, but it was one of my favorite parts of the book. It wasn’t rushed at all and had just the perfect amount of slow burn to it. I shipped Nadia and Gray all the way!

I will say that part of this story, especially towards the end, reminded me of Wall-E (yes I watch way too many Disney movies), but in a good way. This is my first book by Sharon Cameron but I can definitely see why her books come so highly praised, which I prefer any day over hype. After finishing this book, I bought Rook on audio and realized that I had another one of her books, The Dark Unwinding (back from my book buying hoarding days). Now I have two books by her to keep me busy until her next book comes out, which I’m already looking forward to. If Nick didn’t already convince you to read The Forgetting when she reviewed it a few months ago, then let this be your friendly reminder that this book is a must read!
